Gabriel Cabezas Wins Prestigious Award
January 25, 2008New York, January 21, 2008 – Award-winning Costa Rican-American violoncellist Gabriel Cabezas, 15 years old, became a Second Prize Winner of the prominent 2007-2008 Young Concert Artists International Auditions held at Kauffman Concert Hall in New York City on January 15th – 19th, 2008. Young Concert Artists, an organization founded by Susan Wardsworth in 1961, distinguishes and develops the careers of extraordinary musicians from all over the world. The 2007-2008 Auditions attracted hundreds of applicants from whom more than 50 semi-finalists, and subsequently 15 finalists were evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges including Pamela Frank, Robert McDuffie, Toby Saks, Stephen Burns, Gary Graffman, Roberto Montenegro, Marya Martin, Scott Nickrenz, Ilana Vered and Ignat Solzhenitsyn, among others. Cabezas, the youngest of the 15 finalists, also was the recipient of “The Emerging Artist Prize Award of the Seattle Chamber Music Festival” and “The Sander Buchman Memorial Prize Award.”
UPCOMING CONCERT
In March 2008, Cabezas will make his international orchestral debut as guest soloist of the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica under the direction of its Music Director Chosei Komatsu, performing the Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in B Minor, Opus 104 of Antonin Dvorak. These concerts, which open the Official 2008 Season of the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, will take place on March 7th and 9th, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively at the historic National Theatre of Costa Rica.
