VIOLONCELLIST GABRIEL CABEZAS WINS FIRST PRIZE AT THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA YOUTH AUDITIONS; MAKES INTERNATIONAL ORCHESTRAL DEBUT PREVIOUS WEEK IN COSTA RICA
Chicago, March 16, 2008
Award-winning Costa Rican-American violoncellist Gabriel Cabezas, 15 years old, won First Prize at The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions held at Symphony Center – Orchestra Hall in Chicago on March 15, 2008. As a result, Cabezas will perform as a guest soloist with The Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in the near future (date to be announced). Young soloists like Cabezas have won a solo ist debut with the CSO since the organization established its original competition in 1920. The week before, Cabezas made his international orchestral debut with The National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica (OSN) under the direction of Maestro Chosei Komatsu at the historic National Theatre in San José, Costa Rica. La Nación’s music critic Andrés Sáenz wrote about Cabezas‚ performance of the Concerto in B minor for Violoncello and Orchestra, Op. 104 by Antonin Dvorák for the opening concert of the 2008 season of the OSN as follows: “to the luster and range of the sound that he obtained with his instrument, Cabezas added a interpretative maturity unusual for someone so young (he turned fifteen years old not long ago). This was evidenced by the nobility and expressivity of his phrasing, colors and tonalities, and his passionate and spontaneous delivery.” Cabezas actively supports and participates in community outreach programs for the youth through entities like The Sphinx Organization and From The Top in the United States, and the Programa Sistema Nacional de Educación Musical (SINEM) of the Ministry/Secretariat of Culture and Youth in Costa Rica.
