Gabriel Cabezas Awarded Maria Isabel Prieto Award
August 30, 2006 Sphinx Competition 2006 Laureates

White Pine Music has been fortunate to recently work with Gabriel Cabezas, 13, who was awarded the Maria Isabel Prieto Award by unanimous decision of the jury of the Fifth Carlos Prieto International Violoncello Competition held in Morelia, Mexico in August of 2006, in recognition of his “extraordinary talent and magnificient performances throughout the competition.” The Fifth Carlos Prieto International Violoncello Competition is sponsored by the Mexican Council for Culture and arts and the Government of the State of Michoacan, and is held at the Conservatorio de las Rosas, the oldest music institution of the Americas. This year, the competition attracted musicians from numerous nations including the United States, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Croatia, Ucraine, Colombia, Italy, Belarus, Spain, Bulgaria, Korea, Finland, Romania and Russia, among others, ranging in age from eleven to thirty-one years old. The Jury was composed of the following musicians: Jesus Castro-Balbi (Peru/U.S.A.), Jose Luis Galvez (Mexico), William Molina (Venezuela), Philippe Muller (France), Aldo Parisot (Brazil/U.S.A.), Asier Polo (Spain) and Carlos Prieto (Mexico).
Gabriel studies under the direction of Professor Hans Jorgen Jensen of Northwestern University, Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Meadowmount School of Music. Gabriel lives in Wilmette, Illinois where he attends Ninth Grade at The New Trier Township High School.
